The recent collapse of a major bridge connecting Yola to Gombe Road has significantly disrupted transportation in the region.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) promptly conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the incident, which occurred in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The collapse has stranded commuters and goods, severely affecting trade and travel between the two states.
According to NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Ezekiel Manzo, the incident was likely caused by structural weaknesses worsened by heavy seasonal rains.
NEMA Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, initiated a rapid assessment to evaluate the extent of the damage and recommend necessary mitigation steps.
The assessment team, led by Mr. Musa Yakubu from NEMA Yola operations office, collaborated with the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) of Lamurde Local Government Council.
Initial reports indicate that the collapse has severely affected critical infrastructure, creating a major transportation bottleneck and causing significant delays for emergency services.
Residents are advised to avoid the area until further notice, as the site poses serious safety risks.
NEMA’s Musa Yakubu emphasized the urgent need for government support to ensure the proper maintenance of such vital infrastructure.
He also appealed to residents to remain patient during the reconstruction process, which may take time but will ultimately provide a safer and more durable connection.
