The Nigerian Police Force has arrested nine suspects during the ongoing Edo State governorship election.
Eight of the suspects were apprehended for alleged vote buying, while the ninth suspect was caught impersonating a journalist from a prominent television station.
Two key suspects, Emotingham Godspower and Farawei Isaac, both members of the Peoples Democratic Party, were arrested in a synchronized raid at So Cash Guest House in Ekpoma.
The police recovered a substantial amount of cash, a list of voters’ names with corresponding monetary values, pre-filled ballot papers, and fake identification cards.
These suspects are linked to a larger network involving kingpins known as “Atiku” and “The Boss.”
Six additional suspects – Suleiman Abdurahim, Fatima Yakubu, Yusuf Aminat, Salihu Lukman, and Safianu Saratu – were arrested at Aibotse Secondary School in Auchi for vote buying.
They were found with a large sum of money, weapons, and a plan outlining voter intimidation strategies.
The police have emphasized their commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and peaceful election.
According to Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, investigations are ongoing, and updates will be provided as events unfold.
It’s worth noting that vote buying is a serious offense in Nigeria, punishable by law. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has warned against vote buying and selling, citing the Electoral Act, which states that anyone found guilty of buying or selling votes can face fines of up to N500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years.
