The Federal Government has released six protesters associated with the #EndBadGovernance movement, a small fraction of the over 1,403 individuals arrested and detained nationwide in connection with the protests.
This development follows a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which granted bail to 10 protesters charged with treason-related offenses, albeit with an exorbitant bail condition of N10 million each.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which commenced on August 1, 2024, were sparked by widespread discontent with the country’s worsening economic crisis, escalating hunger, and demands for improved governance.
However, the response by security agencies has been marked by excessive force, resulting in casualties and a large number of arrests.
This heavy-handed approach has drawn criticism from some lawyers, who have denounced the Federal Government’s tactics as repressive and unjustified against demonstrators exercising their constitutional rights.
The six persons were freed, last Thursday, in Kaduna State, on the orders of the Director General of the Department of State Service, DSS, Adeola Ajayi.
The DSS also said that three of the protesters would be arraigned in court.
