The #FearlessOctober1 protest has kicked off in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, as part of a nationwide demonstration against the country’s economic hardship.
This protest is a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance movement that took place from August 1 to 10.
Protesters gathered as early as 7 am at Utako market in the Utako area of the FCT, where the demonstration is currently underway.
According to Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation at Take It Back Movement, the harsh economic conditions are a direct result of the Federal Government’s policies.
Multiple cities across Nigeria are participating in the protests, including Lagos, Ibadan, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, and Osogbo. Protest locations include strategic spots like Eagle Square in Abuja, major roundabouts, and city centers near government buildings and transport hubs.
To ensure safety, security forces have increased their presence, and localized travel delays are expected. There’s also a risk of clashes with security forces, especially if officials ban gatherings or protesters block major roads.
The protests come on the day of Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.
