A group of sports journalists traveling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the Super Eagles’ African Nations Cup qualifier match against Libya were abducted by gunmen.
The incident occurred on Wednesday while the journalists were traveling from Lagos to Uyo passing through Iseke, around the Ihiala area of Anambra State.
Fortunately, six other crew members were rescued by joint security forces led by the Anambra State Police Command.
The police had confirmed that the rescue operation was still ongoing to save the seventh crew member.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and deployed personnel to rescue the abducted journalists. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command’s spokesperson, stated, “We intercepted the information as it was being shared on various social media platforms yesterday, and we went to work immediately. As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing.”
Unfortunately, it was later reported that the seventh member, identified as Kay, a technical crew member, was killed.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Libya in the African Nations Cup qualifier.
The kidnapping occurred just a day before the highly anticipated match, scheduled to take place on Friday in Uyo.
