Ariyo Monday, a student of Obafemi Grammar School died after a teacher allegedly inflicted excessive punishment on him.
The incident occurred on October 15, 2024, in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State
According to eyewitness accounts and a video posted by activist Justadetoun, the teacher had brought a trash can to Ariyo’s class, warning students not to break it. Ariyo jokingly replied that the dustbin was purchased with students’ money, which seemingly offended the teacher. The teacher reported Ariyo to the principal, receiving instructions to punish him.
Ariyo was subjected to 24 strokes of the cane and forced to perform 162 frog jumps, as confirmed by police spokesperson Omolola Odutola. During the punishment, Ariyo collapsed. Footage showed him groaning and struggling to speak while on a hospital drip.
Ariyo was rushed to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Idi-Aba for medical attention but sadly passed away on Friday. His body has been deposited at Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy. The police are investigating the cause of death.
Omolola Odutola stated, “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today [Friday].”
