The Nigerian Senate has approved N25 billion refund to Kebbi and Nasarawa states for constructing two federal airports.
Kebbi State will receive N15.1 billion, while Nasarawa State will get N9.5 billion.
This is meant to settle outstanding claims and liabilities incurred by the states for executing federal government projects.
The airports in question are the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin-Kebbi and the Lafia Cargo Airport.
According to the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, both airports were constructed in line with contract specifications and met the required standards.
The Federal Ministry of Aviation conducted a series of inspection visits and certified the quality of work done.
The committee’s report, presented by Senator Haruna Manu, revealed that the state governments have paid all contractors involved in the projects. The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) reviewed and certified the refund amounts: N15,137,336,095.88 for Kebbi State and N9,542,651,786.11 for Nasarawa State.
The Senate’s approval followed the committee’s recommendation to prioritize the settlement of incurred debts through Promissory Notes.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, put the committee’s recommendations to a voice vote, and senators unanimously approved the refund.
