Equatorial Guinea’s government has sacked Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), after explicit videos featuring him with women were leaked online.
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo ordered the dismissal, citing Engonga’s misconduct and personal behavior incompatible with his public position, as stated in Decree No. 118/2024.
The scandal erupted when nearly 400 tapes showing Engonga’s intimate moments with VIP women, including his cousins, surfaced on social media.
First Lady Constancia Mangue Obiang condemned Engonga’s actions, calling for swift governmental action to safeguard Equatoguinean women’s dignity during a meeting with Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue.
“H.E. Mrs. Constancia Mangue of Obiang… has wanted to know the strategy that the Government proposes to mitigate this situation that does nothing but distort and denigrate the image and reputation of the Guineo-Ecuadorian woman, despite the efforts made on the issue of gender,” reads a statement from the First Lady’s Press Office.
Engonga’s removal has generated widespread controversy, with many criticizing his actions. Some have even praised the government’s swift response, noting that Engonga’s behavior was unacceptable for a public official.
