Beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina has secured the position of first runner-up at the 2024 Miss Universe pageant, marking the best-ever performance by a Nigerian in the competition.
The grand finale, held on November 16 in Mexico City, saw Adetshina outshine over 120 contestants worldwide to claim the second spot.
Initially, she competed in the Miss South Africa pageant but withdrew due to a controversy.
Critics questioned her nationality, and South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs raised allegations concerning her mother’s documentation. Despite these challenges, she was invited to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria competition. Adetshina emerged victorious among 24 contestants, earning her place on the international stage.
The 2024 Miss Universe crown was eventually awarded to Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, who made history as the first Danish contestant to win the title in 61 years.
The top five finalists were completed by Miss Mexico, María Fernanda Beltrán Figueroa, Miss Thailand, Suchata Chuangsri, and Miss Venezuela, Ileana Marquez.
This year’s Miss Universe pageant was celebrated for its inclusivity and diversity. It marked the debut of contestants from Iran and Somalia.
Reflecting on her achievement, Adetshina expressed immense gratitude for the support she received from Nigeria and the international community.
