The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has opposed Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ‘s potential candidacy for the 2027 gubernatorial elections. The party has condemned what it describes as an attempt to transform governance in Lagos into a family inheritance.
This reaction comes in response to recent endorsements by groups such as the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and Friends of Seyi Tinubu. These groups have promoted Seyi as a promising leader with visionary qualities. They further suggested that his leadership could sustain his father’s political legacy, who has wielded considerable influence in Lagos politics for decades.
The Lagos PDP, however, has dismissed these endorsements. Speaking on behalf of the party, Hakeem Amode, the PDP’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, criticized the notion of Seyi Tinubu succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Amode declared, “Lagos will not serve him.” He argued that governance is not a hereditary right and insisted that Lagosians would reject any attempt to impose Seyi Tinubu as their next governor.
Amode expressed concerns about what he called the “Tinubu political dynasty,” which he believes prioritizes family interests over the will of the people. “Governorship is not a gift,” Amode told Punch. He stressed that Lagosians are increasingly aware of their political agency and demonstrated this during the last presidential election when many voted against President Bola Tinubu.
Amode said, “Lagosians sent a clear message in the last presidential election. They rejected President Tinubu, and they will reject any further attempt to extend his influence through his son.”
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to consolidate power within one family, thereby undermining democratic principles.
Amode added that Lagosians, who have endured years of APC rule, are yearning for transparent and inclusive governance, which the PDP promises to deliver.
