A fire outbreak occurred at the Lafia Modern Market in Nasarawa State on Friday, destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The inferno, which began around 9:45 am, was reportedly caused by a nearby dump site.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire spread rapidly, engulfing several shops and stalls in the market. However, the intervention of the Nasarawa State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading further, saving some properties and ensuring no lives were lost.
The Director of the Nasarawa State Fire Service, Joshua Ombugu, confirmed the incident and the cause of the fire outbreak. Ombugu stated that properties worth an estimated N150 million were destroyed, while goods valued at about N10 million were salvaged.
“We estimated the property lost to be worth about N150 million and the property we were able to save worth about N10 million,” Ombugu said. “There were no casualties. We promptly mobilised our team, deploying five fire ambulances to the scene.”
