West Ham United footballer Michail Antonio was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today in Essex.
The 34-year-old Jamaican striker, known for his powerful performances on the pitch, is reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical attention at a central London hospital. According to the club, Antonio is “conscious and communicating” while under close observation.
Images circulating online depict significant damage to a Ferrari, which sources confirm was the vehicle involved in the crash.
West Ham issued a formal statement addressing the incident, expressing concern for Antonio’s well-being.
“Michail Antonio is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital,” the club announced. “During this challenging time, we kindly ask for everyone to respect Michail’s privacy and that of his family. The club will provide no further comment this evening but will issue updates as necessary.”
The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their involvement at the accident scene in Epping, responding to reports of a collision involving a single car at approximately 1:02 PM. According to the service, firefighters successfully freed a man trapped in the car by 1:45 PM, after which he was handed over to the Ambulance Service for further care.
A spokesperson for Essex Police stated that investigations into the crash are ongoing, with officers appealing to the public for witnesses or dashcam footage that may assist in understanding the circumstances of the accident.
Earlier in the day, West Ham expressed solidarity with their player, releasing a heartfelt message: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Michail, his family, and friends during this difficult time.”
Antonio, a prominent figure in both the Premier League and the Jamaica national team, has been a pivotal part of West Ham United since his transfer from Nottingham Forest in 2015. Over his tenure with the club, Antonio has made 268 league appearances and netted an impressive 68 goals.
The club and fans are hoping for his swift recovery as investigations into the accident continue.
