Joseph Aoun, the commander of the Lebanese Army, has officially been elected as the nation’s president.
This decision came during a parliamentary voting session on Thursday.
“The speaker announces that the president is Joseph Aoun,” declared Speaker Nabih Berri, confirming the outcome of the decisive second round of voting. Aoun garnered 99 out of the 128 parliamentary votes, securing the presidency after failing to achieve the necessary majority during the first round earlier in the day.
Joseph Aoun, 60, has long been regarded as a prominent and capable figure in Lebanon’s military and political spheres. Known for his steadfast leadership as the head of the Lebanese Armed Forces, Aoun has been pivotal in overseeing the military’s operations, particularly in maintaining stability along Lebanon’s southern borders. His reputation for impartiality and dedication to national security has earned him broad-based respect.
