Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by members of the House, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions.
The lawmakers accused Obasa of abuse of office and gross misconduct.
Obasa’s impeachment follows allegations of financial misconduct, including claims that he used proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Assembly and bypassed due process and procurement regulations.
A petition filed by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State, accused Obasa of mismanaging funds allocated for various projects, including the construction of a gate at the Assembly.
In response to the allegations, Obasa dismissed them as unfounded and politically motivated. However, the lawmakers have replaced him with his Deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and was also a former chief whip of the House.
Meranda, who has been elected as the new Speaker, is the first female to hold the position in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The Deputy Chief Whip, Hon Fatai Mojeed, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
