The Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) has released its electoral timetable for the upcoming local government chairmanship and councillorship elections, scheduled to hold on November 2, 2024.
At a meeting with representatives of 19 political parties, security personnel, State House of Assembly members, and other observers, ABSIEC Chairman Prof. George N. Chima outlined the electoral calendar as follows:
- Notice of Election: September 21, 2024
- Political Party Primaries: September 25 – October 4, 2024
- Submission of List of Candidates: October 5-7, 2024
- Screening of Candidates: October 8-10, 2024
- Hearing of Appeals/Complaints: October 11-12, 2024
- Substitution and Screening of Substituted Candidates: October 14-15, 2024
- Final Publication of List of Candidates: October 16, 2024
- Electioneering Campaigns: October 18-31, 2024
- Notice of Polls: October 18, 2024
- Local Government Election Date: November 2, 2024
Chima emphasized the importance of democratic governance at the local level and assured parties of ABSIEC’s commitment to credible elections.
“The commission is determined to ensure that the elections are free, fair, and credible,” he stated.
