Hon. Chidi Obetta, the representative of Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has reaffirmed his commitment to the creation of Adada State.
Speaking during his second Town Hall Meeting held at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Obetta emphasized that Adada State is long overdue and should be the first new state to emerge from the South East region of Nigeria.
Obetta noted that Nsukka remains the only old province in the South East yet to achieve state status, despite its substantial population and extensive landmass.
He stated, “Since 1979, the people of the South East have endorsed the creation of Adada State. Nsukka is the only old province that has not become a state. Abakaliki, Awka, and Owerri have all transitioned to states, yet Nsukka Zone remains a senatorial district.”
Obetta has co-sponsored a bill aimed at amending the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to facilitate the creation of Adada State. The proposal is part of a broader push for new states in the South East, including demands for Etiti, Olu, Equity, Aba, Anim, and others. However, Obetta insists that Adada State deserves priority.
“If there is any state that should be created from the Southeast, the first should be Adada State,” Obetta declared.
