A 27-year-old woman from Anambra State, who was discovered in a bush with her two young children after allegedly being violently assaulted and expelled from her home by her husband, has declared that she has no intention of leaving him.
Speaking in an interview with human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, the woman expressed her unwavering love for her husband, emphasizing her commitment to their marriage despite the abuse. “I love my husband,” she stated firmly. “I don’t want to leave him.”
The woman’s husband, addressing the incident, pledged to reform his behavior and promised never to lay hands on his wife again. “I love her too,” he confessed, assuring that such an incident would not happen in the future.
Harrison Gwamnishu noted that the woman took deliberate steps to shield her husband from any form of punitive action. “When we arrived in Anambra to investigate the situation, she refused to allow us to meet her husband initially,” Gwamnishu explained. “It was only after we insisted that she reluctantly introduced us to him. She repeatedly expressed her wish for no action to be taken against him, insisting that she wanted to stay with him.”
The Anambra State Government has since taken over the case.
Gwamnishu revealed that their primary concern during the visit was ensuring the woman’s safety and access to medical care. He praised the intervention of the wife of the Anambra State Governor, who stepped in to provide support for the mother and her children.
“Our first priority was her well-being,” he explained. “Arresting the husband was secondary, especially as she was adamant about her desire to stay with him. We ensured she received the necessary medical attention, and we are grateful for the state government’s commitment to her continued welfare.”
