In a conversation with OwnGoalNigeria at the Kigali Airport, Augustine Eguavoen, the interim coach of the Super Eagles, announced his decision to step down from his role after the match against Rwanda on Tuesday.
Eguavoen revealed that he was given a specific mandate by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to oversee the team’s matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda in the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Expressing his satisfaction with the team’s performance, Eguavoen commended the players for their discipline and hard work.
“I’m very pleased with the boys… thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys who supported me,” he said.
Although his tenure as interim coach ends with the Rwanda match, Eguavoen indicated his willingness to offer tactical advice to the next coach if need be, particularly in preparation for the team’s next opponent, Libya.
“I want to be closer to the team… I can give inside story and inside information that we need to overcome Libya,” he noted.
He however, refused to comment on the Libya game.
Eguavoen expressed confidence in the team’s bright future, citing the spirit and dedication exhibited by the players.
“No team is a pushover anymore, but with this spirit, we have a very bright future,” he concluded.
