A Federal High Court in Abuja has approved a lawsuit seeking to compel the Federal Government to investigate the alleged connection between Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and bandit activities in Zamfara State.
The lawsuit, filed by Zamfara-based human rights activist Abubakar Dahiru, names President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Inspector General of Police as defendants.
The plaintiff alleges that Matawalle, who served as Zamfara’s governor from 2019 to 2023, is linked to the surge in banditry and kidnapping in the state.
Specifically, the plaintiff cites public accusations made by Governor Dauda Lawal and online publications detailing Matawalle’s alleged involvement with bandits, including sponsoring them, buying vehicles, and sabotaging law enforcement efforts.
The plaintiff seeks a court declaration ordering President Tinubu to direct the Inspector General of Police to investigate Matawalle’s alleged links to banditry and kidnapping.
Additionally, the plaintiff requests an order compelling the President to direct the Inspector General to investigate bandit activities in Zamfara State.
The plaintiff also seeks a declaration that the President has the constitutional authority to give directions to the Inspector General regarding public safety and order.
The court has yet to schedule a hearing date for the matter.
It’s worth noting that Bello Matawalle has served as Minister of State for Defence since 2023 and previously as Governor of Zamfara State from 2019 to 2023.
