A devastating inter-cult clash has erupted in the Awarra and Ochia communities of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area in Imo State, resulting in the loss of eight lives.
The clash, which began weeks ago, has left five cult members and three community members dead, with one person still missing after being abducted.
According to a youth leader, the clash is a supremacy battle between two groups vying for control over proceeds from oil companies operating in the area. The groups, led by individuals known as Acid and Achis, have been engaging in violent confrontations, displacing community members and causing widespread fear.
The community leader expressed concerns about the displacement of community members, who have taken refuge in neighboring churches due to fear of being killed.
Many have lost access to their homes, farmlands, and livelihoods, worsening the economic hardship in the region.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, assured that security agencies are working to restore peace in the area.
The Commissioner of Police has engaged with stakeholders, enhanced security strategies, and made several arrests.
Community leaders urge the Nigeria Police and Imo State Government to intervene, ensuring the safe return of displaced community members.
