The Zamfara chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made a pressing appeal to President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara due to the security challenges facing the state.
This call to action comes as the party expresses its loss of confidence in Governor Dauda Lawal’s ability to address the insecurity issues plaguing the region.
In a statement released by the state spokesperson, Yusuf Idris, the APC praised the military’s efforts in combating bandits in the North-West under Defence Minister Bello Matawalle’s supervision.
However, the party alleged that Governor Lawal’s administration is actively working to undermine these efforts through media campaigns aimed at distracting the federal government.
“As a party, we observe with dismay how the Zamfara government is trying to sabotage the ongoing onslaught through its media campaigns,” said APC, which alleged this was to distract the federal government’s efforts.
“We have observed that Lawal, as the governor of the state, has never in any way supported the military operations in the state in terms of logistics,” the party added
The APC pointed out that Governor Lawal has failed to provide logistical support to the military operations in the state, despite the minister’s partnership in fighting bandits.
Furthermore, the party accused the governor of attempting to politicize the issue by revisiting earlier accusations of embezzlement against Minister Matawalle.
The party’s concerns were heightened by Governor Lawal’s alleged approval of over N1.3 billion to sponsor terrorism, which he later denied, and his decision to budget over N19 billion for his wife’s kitchen while repeatedly recalling allegations against his predecessor.
In response to these allegations, the state publicity secretary of the PDP, Haliru Andi, acknowledged awareness of the APC’s statement and announced plans to address the “empty allegations” against the PDP-led government in the state.
The situation remains tense, with the APC’s call for a state of emergency hanging in the balance.
