The Ebonyi State Government has taken decisive action against non-compliant mining companies, sealing four of them for failing to adhere to the Community Development Agreement (CDA) rules and regulations.
Hon. Chidi Onyia, Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, led the joint taskforce operation, emphasizing that miners had ample time to comply since July last year but chose to ignore the rules.
The sealed companies include Anli Mining and Investment Ltd, China Solid Rock 1 and 2, located in Ngodo Amachi, Afikpo Local Government Area, and Shenglong Mining in Eziulo, Ishielu Council.
At least ten local workers were laid off at China Solid Rock 2, operated by the Chinese in Afikpo. Commissioner Onyia stressed that the sites will remain shut until the companies follow the state government’s directives. “The mining Act clearly states that every miner must prepare a CDA to benefit and uplift the community wherein they operate,” Onyia said. “But most mining companies in Ebonyi State have ignored this. This is against the dictates of the state, and we won’t take it anymore.”Â
Onyia also criticized Shenglong Mining’s CDA, labeling it “fraudulent.” He questioned how a company of its size could justify providing only one million naira annually to the community, while other companies in Ebonyi construct tarred roads for their host communities.
The state government will continue to monitor mining activities, ensuring all companies follow the law. Companies found breaking the rules will be shut down. Mr. George Li, General Manager of Anli Mining and Investment Ltd, has pledged to work with the state government to resolve the issue.
