Obaseki: We Grew Edo’s Economy From 10 billion to 25 billion

Outgoing Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, is proud of his administration’s economic achievements, citing a remarkable growth of the state’s economy from N10 billion to over N25 billion during his eight-year tenure.
In his final statewide broadcast, Obaseki highlighted the significant strides made in various sectors, including agriculture, oil and gas, and manufacturing.
“We started a revolution in agriculture in Edo State, allocating over 120,000 hectares of land for oil palm estate development, with about 40,000 hectares already cultivated,” Obaseki stated. This initiative has positioned Edo State as Nigeria’s leading producer of palm oil and cassava.
The state’s oil and gas sector has also experienced substantial growth, with the attraction of two modular refineries, including the Edo Refinery and Petrochemical Company and the DuPont Energy Park. Additionally, billions of dollars have been invested in manufacturing items such as ceramics, tiles, glass, iron, steel, wood, and cement.
Obaseki noted that his administration’s efforts to stimulate economic activities have transformed Edo State into an “oasis of hope.” He also emphasized the significant improvement in infrastructure, with over 850 kilometers of state roads constructed across all local governments.
Edo State now generates almost 1000MW of electricity daily, and its new electricity law has created an electricity market attractive to investors in digital infrastructure. The state boasts an impressive network of nearly 2500 kilometers of fiber optic cables.
As Obaseki’s administration comes to an end, he reflected on the progress made, stating, “We have demonstrated that it is possible to change the circumstances of our state.” He expressed confidence that the plan he leaves behind will serve as a compass for future growth and development.
With Obaseki’s tenure concluding on November 12, 2024, Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken over as the new governor of Edo State.
