Since assuming office, Prince Shuaibu has undertaken proactive measures to rejuvenate the steel industry. Notably, a significant milestone was achieved during a groundbreaking visit to China alongside the Minister of Defense, resulting in the successful acquisition of a substantial investment earmarked for steel production. These investments are poised to breathe new life into the Light Steel Mill (LSM) segment of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex, specifically focusing on the production of iron rods. A total of $10 billion in fresh investments, dedicated to both new and existing steel plants in Nigeria, are set to be implemented, consequently generating over 500,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities within the steel industry.
The Steel Development Ministry’s strategic partnerships with the Ministry of Works, aimed at supplying steel for infrastructure construction, and its involvement in producing military equipment for the Nigerian Army highlight the sector’s diversification. This alignment with crucial national projects underscores the ministry’s pivotal role in contributing to key initiatives across various sectors.
