Prison experts have shed light on why Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was isolated from other inmates at the correctional center, debunking claims of a VIP section.
According to Bishop Kayode Williams, Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, the separation was necessary due to Bobrisky’s unique circumstances.
“The accommodations provided for inmates are categorized. Condemned prisoners, those sentenced to death, are separated from others. Convicted inmates have their own area,” Williams explained on Arise TV’s The Morning Show.
Regarding Bobrisky’s situation, Williams stated, “Considering his transgender appearance, he would be in danger among male inmates. His safety required a special arrangement, which is protective custody.”
Francis Enobore, former National PRO of the Nigerian Correctional Service, corroborated Williams’ statement, emphasizing the service’s profiling process for inmate safety and environmental concerns.
“Bobrisky’s appearance poses a risk. Unrepentant homosexuals among the inmates could create a security issue. We can’t ignore this reality,” Enobore said, refuting claims of Bobrisky receiving special treatment.
Enobore clarified, “There’s no private apartment or special arrangement for Bobrisky. The Nigerian Correctional Service ensures equal treatment for all inmates.”
The controversy began when Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, shared a voice note allegedly from Bobrisky, claiming his godfather and the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service arranged for a private apartment during his six-month sentence.
The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board suspended two deputy controllers in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre in Lagos, pending an investigation into Bobrisky’s bribery allegations.
Prison experts insist Bobrisky’s separation from fellow inmates is due to protective custody, not VIP treatment.
