A boating accident on September 29 claimed the lives of two Brazilian social media influencers, Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27.
According to PEOPLE, the tragedy occurred after the duo refused to wear life jackets, fearing they would ruin their tans and photos.
After partying on a luxury yacht near São Paulo, Aline and Beatriz joined four others on a speedboat to return to shore. Reports indicate that they declined life jackets, prioritizing their social media images over safety.
The group’s vessel, carrying seven passengers despite its five-person limit, encountered rough waters in the notorious Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat) area. A massive wave struck the boat, sending all passengers into the water.
Vanessa Audrey da Silva, one of the five survivors, recounted her terrible experience to the New York Post. “I frantically grabbed my life vest and clung to a rock as the boat sank,” she said.
The speedboat captain, who remains unidentified, told police that he was ordered to transport six passengers despite the vessel’s capacity limitations. He attempted to rescue those who fell overboard but was only able to retrieve some survivors.
Brazil’s Maritime Firefighters recovered Beatriz’s body after it drifted out to sea. Aline’s body washed ashore at Itaquitanduva Beach a week later.
Aline’s final social media post showed her enjoying the luxury yacht moments before the tragic accident.
