The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has handed down a significant penalty to Barcelona, ordering the Spanish club to play their next away Champions League game without fan support and imposing a 10,000-euro ($11,000) fine.
This decision follows an incident on September 19, where Barcelona fans displayed a racist banner during their match against Monaco.
The offending banner, reading “Flick Heil,” was a clear reference to the Nazi’s infamous “Sieg Heil” slogan, targeting Barcelona’s German coach, Hansi Flick.
UEFA deemed this behavior unacceptable and took swift action.
FC Barcelona condemned the actions of their fans, emphasizing that they “reject any type of justification for violence.”
The club acknowledged the sanction, pledging to comply with the UEFA ruling, strengthen existing measures to prevent similar incidents, implement additional initiatives to prevent future occurrences and impose sanctions on those responsible.
The ban on fan attendance will impact Barcelona’s next away Champions League game, scheduled for November 6 against Serbian club Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade.
Barcelona suffered a 2-1 loss to Monaco in their previous away game, where the incident occurred.
