Olamide Thomas, a woman accused of threatening Seyi Tinubu, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, on social media, has been remanded in prison.
Thomas was arraigned at a Federal High Court in Abuja on a three-count charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/636/2024, and dated December 18, 2024.
The charges against Thomas came from a viral social media post where she allegedly harassed and threatened the aforementioned individuals.
According to the prosecution, Thomas intentionally transmitted communications in the form of video recordings on her social media platforms, making remarks in Yoruba Language that were intended to bully, threaten, and harass the victims.
In count one, Thomas is accused of stating that Seyi Tinubu would die in 2024, and that misfortune and calamity had befallen the Tinubu family. This communication allegedly placed Seyi in fear of death, violence, or bodily harm, contrary to Section 24 (2) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
In count two, Thomas is accused of transmitting communication intended to bully, threaten, and harass Egbetokun, placing him in fear of death, violence, or bodily harm.
Similarly, in count three, Thomas is accused of stating that the children of Adejobi would all die before his eyes, and that he would bury all his children in a single day, with the intent to bully, threaten, and harass Adejobi.
During the arraignment, Victor Okoye, representing the police, informed the court that the matter was fixed for arraignment and that he was ready to proceed. Thomas pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her defense lawyer, T.J. Aondo, SAN, sought to move an oral application on her behalf, but the request was denied.
Justice Emeka Nwite directed Aondo to file a formal bail application and adjourned the matter until December 30, 2024, for the commencement of the trial. Thomas was subsequently remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre pending the hearing of her bail application.
