Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the devastating Gummi boat mishap, which tragically claimed 13 lives at Uban Dawaki Community in Gummi Local Government Area last Sunday.
During a visit to the Emir of Gummi, HRH Justice Lawal Hassan, Governor Lawal, represented by his deputy, Malam Mani Mummini, announced a donation of N20 million to alleviate the hardship faced by the victims’ families, describing the incident as “tragic and monumental.”
To prevent similar tragedies, the state government will collaborate with experts to educate boat operators and users on vital safety measures.
Furthermore, Governor Lawal has directed the government to work with the Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to provide life jackets at all water transport stations across the state, making their use mandatory for passengers and operators.
The Emir of Gummi expressed gratitude for the state government’s gesture and concern, correcting the reported number of deaths to 13, with 20 passengers on board, rather than the initially reported 40 or 50.
