VP Shettima Represents Nigeria at OACPS High-Level Meeting

Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) at the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasized Nigeria’s dedication to OACPS goals and addressing member states’ challenges during a high-level meeting chaired by Angola.
Shettima stated, “Nigeria remains a principal partner of OACPS, championing our shared values of democracy, diaspora engagement, and development.” He highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s presence at the UN General Assembly, saying, “Our presence here allows us to amplify these priorities on the global stage and explore avenues for deeper collaboration.”
Nigeria has demonstrated its support for various OACPS initiatives. Specifically, Nigeria is committed to addressing the ongoing crisis in Haiti and has praised Kenya’s contribution of 400 troops to the effort. Additionally, Nigeria’s technical aid corps programme has sent teachers and doctors to the Caribbean, exemplifying its commitment to uplifting fellow OACPS nations.
Regarding Nigeria’s recent inclusion on a high-risk jurisdiction list for anti-money laundering concerns, Shettima emphasized the need for constructive dialogue with international partners to “set the record straight.”
The Nigeria-OACPS partnership is built on shared values and cooperation in areas such as strengthening OACPS member states, democracy and good governance, diaspora engagement and development, and technical assistance and capacity building. By reaffirming its commitment to OACPS, Nigeria seeks to deepen collaboration and address pressing challenges facing member states.
The partnership between Nigeria and OACPS is crucial for promoting regional development, economic growth, and global cooperation.
