Wike Orders Demolition of Illegal Structures Around Kugbo International Market

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has ordered the immediate demolition of illegal structures along road corridors around the Kugbo International Market in Abuja.
This directive comes after Wike commended Amb. Maureen Tamuno, Group Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Investments Company Limited, for completing Phase 1 of the market.
During his inspection of the market, Wike emphasized its potential to boost economic activities and attract local and international investments, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.
He highlighted the importance of encouraging investment in international markets, particularly in addressing congestion issues in roadside markets.
“The market will play a crucial role in stimulating economic growth and development in Abuja,” Wike said. “It’s essential we encourage investment in international markets, and I’m impressed with the progress made so far.”
Wike expressed concerns over encroachments and substandard structures, instructing the development control team to take action.
“I’ve instructed the development control team to remove any illegal structures along the road corridors,” Wike stated. “We must ensure the market’s surroundings are conducive for business and trade.”
He also urged contractors to allocate more funds to ensure the project’s timely completion by January 2025. Once completed, traders operating on the roadside will be relocated to the new market, expanding their businesses.
The minister stressed the need to support traders, particularly those hesitant to join the market, through empowerment programs under the Renewed Hope agenda.
The government will provide additional support for smooth relocation, aiming to create economic activities, employment opportunities, and decongest roads.
