Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has initiated a thorough investigation into the alleged shooting and killing of Smith Odinaka by security agencies in Enugu.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, announced this through a statement released in Enugu on Wednesday.
According to DSP Ndukwe, the incident occurred near the premises of Mercedes-Benz Company on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway at approximately 1 a.m. on October 13.
Smith Odinaka was driving a Mercedes-Benz car with two male friends when a gunshot allegedly fired by security agents struck the vehicle.
Odinaka sustained a gunshot wound on his left hip and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
His body has been deposited in the mortuary pending an autopsy. The police have clarified that, contrary to circulating reports, their investigation has not linked the crime to any police officer or team.
The Commissioner of Police assured the public that all necessary efforts will be made to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, ensuring justice is served.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department will lead the investigation.
DSP Ndukwe stated, “Preliminary findings indicate that the victim was driving a Mercedes-Benz car in the company of two of his male friends when a gunshot, allegedly fired by individuals suspected to be security agents, struck the vehicle.”
He further emphasized that intensive investigative efforts will be made to uncover the truth, and the findings will be made public upon completion of the investigation.
