Ibadan Building Collapse: NEMA Rescues Five, Ten Feared Dead

10 lives were lost in a building collapse that occurred in the Jegede area of Ibadan.
However, thanks to the response of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other stakeholders, five people were rescued alive from the rubble.
According to Mr. Kadiri Olanrewaju, South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, “With the combined effort of response stakeholders, five persons were rescued alive, which include one adult male, two adult females, and two children.”
These survivors were immediately taken to Mercyland Clinic and Maternity Center for medical attention.
Unfortunately, one of the rescued victims was unconscious and had to be transferred to Adeoyo General Hospital at Temetu, Ibadan, for further treatment.
On a more positive note, one adult victim has been discharged from the hospital.
The building collapse incident occurred on October 31, 2024, and NEMA received a distress alert on Thursday. In collaboration with other stakeholders, the agency’s response helped save precious lives.
Rev. Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of Oyo State Fire Services, reported that the fire services received calls for help around 2 a.m. and immediately rushed to the scene. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with first responders working tirelessly to find any more survivors.
The cause of the building collapse is still unknown, but investigations are expected to uncover the underlying factors.
The Oyo State government has been urged to ensure the safety of buildings across the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde has offered condolences to the affected families and promised to provide necessary resources for rescue operations and address building safety concerns in the state.
