The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned opposition parties in Nigeria not to get overly excited about Kamala Harris’ defeat in the United States presidential election.
The APC is confident President Bola Tinubu will secure a landslide victory in the 2027 elections.
Former US President Donald Trump’s win shocked the world.
Obiora Ifo, National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, praised the US election as a true test of democracy, highlighting the need for Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission to learn from the process. Ifo noted that the American voting public’s ability to overlook the incumbency factor, a significant issue in Africa and Nigeria, is particularly interesting.
Ladipo Johnson, spokesman for the New Nigeria Peoples Party, acknowledged the complexity of the US electoral system but wondered when Nigeria would b
reak free from leaders using incumbency and security to intimidate the opposition.
However, Bala Ibrahim, APC’s National Publicity Director, cautioned opposition parties not to read too much into the US election outcome.
Ibrahim expressed confidence that President Tinubu’s economic reforms will yield positive results by 2026 and 2027, securing his re-election.
“The APC is not losing sleep over the threat,” Ibrahim said. “By the time Nigerians begin to harvest the rewards of our economic reforms, they will applaud and urge the president to continue. It will be almost impossible for an outsider, who has failed the country before, to defeat the incumbent.”
Ibrahim assured that the APC is strategizing ahead, ready to face any challenges from the opposition. “When we get to the bridge, we will see who has the strongest stride to cross it. And I assure you, the APC will not be found wanting.”
