Nigeria’s Catholic community is mourning the loss of its oldest priest, Reverend Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, who passed away at the age of 104. His death, described as the end of a “life well-lived,” occurred in the early hours of Sunday, November 24, 2024, at approximately 2:30 am.
The Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Gabriel Dunia, announced the cleric’s passing and expressed gratitude for the legacy he left behind. Bishop Dunia said, “With gratitude to God for a life well lived on earth, I hereby inform you of the passing of the Rt. Rev. MSGR Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria as of today, to the great beyond at approximately 2:30 am this morning, November 24, 2024. He was of the Diocese of Auchi. He died at the age of 104. May his lovely and gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
Msgr. Oleghe was a towering figure in the Catholic Church, known for his faith, dedication to service, and a life that inspired many across the country and beyond. For decades, he served as a spiritual leader and a source of guidance to his parishioners, embodying the virtues of humility, compassion, and commitment to God’s work.
The Diocese of Auchi has announced plans to honor the life and legacy of the late cleric with a funeral service scheduled for Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
